A moratorium on evictions is needed

As the global public health crisis of COVID-19 continues to cause closures within Prince Edward Island, we are asking that the province commit to an immediate moratorium on evictions and delays with previous issued orders of eviction.

The safety and security of all residents should be prioritized during times of emergency. Proceeding with hearings at IRAC, and displacing people during times of recommended social distancing and/or self-isolation is potentially dangerous to our community at large. Our community will be affected in many ways by this pandemic – loss of wages, health care pressures, and community resource closures – which will create health risks and uncertainty for our neighbours.

We ask that the Government of PEI enact that the Office of Residential Rental Property place a moratorium on evictions, and postponing previously issued evictions for three months OR until the pandemic emergency on PEI is lifted. To ensure we are supporting our community members collectively, we need to keep everyone safe, healthy and housed.
